How to gain insights through the Systemic Constellations process
Systemic Constellations is a comprehensive process which allows us to gain insights into the hidden dynamics in the systems within which we live and work, and discover what would allow them to function more effectively.
In the Systemic Constellations process, I work with a leader or small leadership team through the following process:
- Intention: Clarify the intent of the session, the scope of inquiry, and the desired outcome.
- Mapping: Identify the known elements involved and map their expected relationships to each other.
- Discovery: Uncover actual relationships using a representation process to explore the dynamics. In the representation process, my team or representatives (or myself and the client) will “stand in” for different elements of the system. By taking a position in physical space and reporting our insights, we are able to access relevant and helpful insights that would not otherwise be accessed.
- Insight: Typically, the discovery phase will reveal missing elements, overlooked relationships, processes that are out-of-sequence, or misalignments between people or elements that are impacting the process as a whole.
- Solution: In the solution phase, elements can be moved, added or removed, and different configurations can be explored. The effect of these actions on the whole system will be readily visible, providing valuable information that can be incorporated into decisions about the path forward.
How the Systemic Constellations process works
Systemic Constellations can be conducted in two ways: as a one-on-one process, or as a workshop with a team of representatives:
- In a one-on-one setting (in person or online), the facilitator will use written cards to map the system, and take turns with the client to engage the representation process. By taking a position in physical space and reporting our insights, we are able to access relevant and helpful insights.
- In a group setting (in person), participants stand in for different aspects of the system and report their experiences from the perspective of the person or element they represent.
- In a team setting (in person or online), we use a Whiteboard to map the system, and a team of experienced representatives to “stand in” for different aspects of the system.
